What to Expect at Your Guinea Pig's Wellness Visit
The treatments and services below are what you can expect when you bring your guinea pig in for their routine wellness visit.
- New pet exam – Physical exam, fecal analysis, discuss and schedule spay/neuter
- Spay and Neuter are a vital part of healthcare in guinea pigs to help prevent reproductive tumors, cancers, cysts, aggression, and other undesirable behaviors
- 6 Month exam – Physical exam, fecal analysis
- Annual exam – Physical exam, fecal analysis, CBC/Blood Chemistry Panel
- Senior exam – Just like the annual exam, and we also recommend imaging (radiographs, ultrasound or CT) to screen for internal disease
Common Diseases & Conditions in Guinea Pigs
Guinea pigs can experience many different health conditions, with some being life-threatening. These include:

Signs of a Health Emergency in Guinea Pigs
While some cases require urgent treatment, most after-hours concerns are best evaluated by our experienced team. Rather than going to an emergency clinic, the best thing for you and your pet is to come see our specialists at our next available appointment. If no appointments are available, we offer Emergency Admission Mon-Saturday beginning at 8am.
Signs Your Guinea Pig May Need Urgent Care
- Diarrhea or fewer stools than normal
- Decreased appetite or not eating
- Straining or squealing when urinating
- Pain when handled or touched
- Rolling, flipping, or loss of balance
- Head tilt
- Hunched posture
- Matted coat

- A tense, painful abdomen
- Weakness, lethargy, depression
Signs Your Guinea Pig May Need Emergency Veterinary Care
- Diarrhea consistently for 24+ hours
- Heavy, labored breathing
- Not walking or standing
- Uncontrollable bleeding
- Unconsciousness
Until your guinea pig can be seen by our specialists you may syringe-feed a slurry of softened pellets or Oxbow Critical Care mixed with water to provide fiber and nutritional support.

Comprehensive Health and Dental Checkup
Guinea pigs are prey animals, and instinctively hide any signs of pain or illness. The Guinea Pig VetCare Package includes a full physical examination by one of our vets. These checkups help us look for underlying issues that may not be outwardly noticeable to you.
Intestinal Parasite Screen
The Guinea Pig VetCare Package includes a combined test to screen your guinea pig for roundworms, tapeworms, coccidia, and giardia, all of which can be harmful to their health.
Spay/Neuter
Spaying or neutering is an important preventative measure that can protect your guinea pig from reproductive tumors, cancers, and cysts, and reduce undesirable behaviors. Your Guinea Pig VetCare Package includes the cost of surgery, hospitalized recovery, fluid therapy during surgery, and multimodal pain relief, plus doses to administer at home. Your guinea pig will be monitored during and after surgery by a dedicated technician.
Nail Trim
We will trim your guinea pig’s nails for their comfort and safety.
Vitamin C Liquid Supplement
Your VetCare Package includes a tasty liquid vitamin C supplement that your guinea pig needs daily to protect them from scurvy.
Critical Care and Feeding Syringe
If your pet stops eating their hay for an extended period of time, they could develop life-threatening issues. That’s why our Guinea Pig VetCare Package includes a quality hand-feeding formula and syringe to have on hand in case of an emergency.
Package Add-Ons
Comprehensive Blood Panel: ($210 save $130). With a small drop of blood, we will screen your pet for infection, inflammation, or anemia. Blood chemistries can reveal any issues related to tissue and internal organ dysfunction and help to detect diabetes, kidney disease, liver disease, and other disorders.
