Exotic Pet Euthanasia in Charleston, SC

Saying goodbye to a cherished pet is never easy, but you’re not alone when it comes time to make the difficult decision to euthanize. At Exotic Vet Care, we can discuss your pet’s end of life care treatment options and help you make the best decision on behalf of your pet. Sometimes, pet euthanasia is the most humane option for preventing an animal’s suffering. We will do everything we can to make your companion’s passing as easy as possible.

What to Expect with Pet Euthanasia

What to Expect with Pet Euthanasia

We make euthanasia as painless and stress-free as possible for your pet. We start by administering a quick sedative and/or analgesic, which most pets don't even feel. This allows your pet to transition peacefully from consciousness to unconsciousness, similar to falling into a deep sleep. Within a few minutes, your pet will no longer be aware or feel any pain or discomfort.

Once your pet is fully asleep, we administer another anesthetic that gently slows and stops the heart. Every scenario is unique, so it will be individually tailored to your pet's needs. We can give this anesthetic intravenously or intracardiac, both of which work in seconds, or into the abdomen, which takes several minutes and is gentler overall. Nonetheless, your pet will not feel any stress or pain during their visit. If you have a reptile or amphibian, keep them warm or place them in an incubator while the anesthesia takes effect to keep them more comfortable, and to make sure the medication is absorbed properly.

Once the procedure is over, you can take your pet home with you for burial or discuss other options with our team.
