Our Doctors

Jose Biascoechea

DVM, Dipl. ABVP (Avian Practice), DIPL. ACEPM

Dr. Biascoechea earned his BS and DVM from Kansas State University. He is board-certified by the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners in Avian Practice and also by the American College of Exotic Pet Medicine. He is a Category II USDA-APHIS-accredited veterinarian. He founded Exotic Vet Care in 2000 and has been practicing exclusively exotic animal medicine and surgery since. He is the staff veterinarian for The Center for Birds of Prey and provides consulting and relief services for the South Carolina Aquarium and The Turtle Survival Center. He lectures frequently at local, state and national conferences. In 2022 in conjunction with other specialists he co-founded The American College of Exotic Pet Medicine. Its goal is to provide the highest level of veterinary care to exotic pets by means of education, training, and advanced certification for veterinarians, and through the discovery and dissemination of new medical knowledge.

Katie Rainwater

MA, DVM

Dr. Rainwater joined our team in November of 2008 after a year-long, small-animal internship with Georgia Veterinary Specialists. A graduate of the zoological track at UC Davis and a California native, she has a colorful history of globetrotting animal experience, including leading research groups studying black howler monkeys in Belize, working with ring-tailed lemurs in Madagascar, and studying elephants in Namibia. Dr. Rainwater is a Category II USDA-APHIS accredited veterinarian. She attends continuing education seminars several times a year to keep up with the latest developments in avian and exotic medicine. She and her husband welcomed their son into the world in August 2013 and they couldn’t be prouder. When not in the clinic, she enjoys stand-up paddleboarding and napping on the porch with her cat, Fireplace.

Abby Duvall

DVM, Dipl. ABVP (Avian Practice)

Dr. Duvall obtained her BS and DVM from Cornell University, then moved south to warmer weather and did a small animal internship at Louisiana State University. After completing her residency in Avian and Exotic Animal Medicine at the University of Tennessee, Dr. Duvall joined Exotic Vet Care. She received her Board Certification in Avian Practice in October 2020. She has extensive experience in breeding and rearing exotic birds and is passionate about travel and falconry. Dr. Duvall enjoys attending and speaking at national and international conferences on exotic animal medicine. She shares her home with a Dachshund, a blue-and-gold macaw, a tortoise, and a gyr x peregrine falcon.

Amanda Morvai

DVM

Dr. Morvai has always been passionate about helping animals. She grew up in New England before double majoring in Zoology and Wildlife Ecology and Conservation at the University of Florida. She then worked as a veterinary technician for several years prior to earning her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Georgia, with an emphasis in Zoological Medicine. In order to gain more specialized training, she then went on to complete a one-year small animal rotating internship at VCA Shoreline, a referral hospital in Connecticut. Afterwards she moved to California and spent two years at The Bird & Pet Clinic of Roseville while getting more proficient with her exotic pet skills prior to joining Exotic Vet Care.  Dr. Morvai also has an interest in aquatic animal medicine and completed AQUAVET I & III where she worked with otters, penguins, fish, rays and even sharks among other species. In her free time, she enjoys exploring the region with her husband, Patrick, as well as cuddling with their Chihuahua mix, Maxwell, and their Siamese mix, Spinx. Her hobbies include travel, yoga, cooking, hiking, and photography.

Practice Manager

Kerry has been managing Exotic Vet Care since 2003. When she is not working to keep the clinic running smoothly and all of our clients and patients happy, she enjoys singing, playing guitar poorly, cooking, and being mommy to Essie and Finn, two former street kitties who are living the good life.

Alberto

Medical Director, LV, AVEPA CERTIFIED (Exotic Pets)

Dr. Alberto Hernandez “Al” graduated with honors from the University of Murcia, Spain and received advanced training in Infectious and Parasitic Diseases. He joined the team at La Marina Exóticos Veterinary Center, where he practiced exotic pet medicine for 4 years. He then carried out various internships and stays in different referral centers specialized in exotic pet medicine, both nationally and internationally. Afterwards he worked at the most prestigious Exotic Pet referral hospital in Madrid, Los Sauces Veterinary Center. He gave it all up to live the American dream and arrived with 2 suitcases with some clothing and his laptop, so he is literally starting from scratch. In 2023 he became a recognized veterinary specialist in Exotic Pet Medicine and Surgery in Spain. While working on obtaining his US license he is our head technician and anesthetist, so rest assured that we take anesthesia seriously. In his free time he likes to bike ride and he is a CrossFit aficionado.

Chandler

Client Services Manager

Chandler joined Exotic Vet Care after graduating from the University of South Carolina with a B.S. in Biology and Geography and working as a rehabilitator at Carolina Wildlife Center, where she fell in love with avian medicine. She has interned in the Avian Medical Clinic at the Center for Birds of Prey and worked on several projects with various organizations promoting environmental health including mapping invasive species for the SC Forestry Commission, tracking toxic waste pollution actively impacting the Congaree Watershed, and assisting in lab work on ecological dynamics of resource allocation in butterfly populations. She has grown a passion to protect and help all animals in need.

Clara

Veterinary Assistant

Clara joined our team in the spring of 2022. She has been a passionate veterinary assistant since being introduced to the field while studying environmental science at SUNY University. Clara brings proficiency and expertise to our clinic along with joy and laughter to our days. In her spare time, she enjoys expressing herself through creation. You can typically find her drawing, painting, and exploring outside with her two pups Frank and Beans.

Samantha, LVT

Licensed Veterinary Technician

Samantha is a Licensed Veterinary Technician and has been with EVC since May 2023.  She is passionate about wildlife conservation & has a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology from College of Charleston. Samantha also earned an Associate’s Degree in Animal Health Technology from Trident Technical College. She’s had the opportunity to gain experience at various wildlife facilities and zoological societies around the U.S. She got her start in wildlife medicine at Project Wildlife in San Diego, California and later took on the role of animal care coordinator at SoCal Parrot, a nonprofit specializing in the care & conservation of the naturalized wild parrot populations in Southern California. More recently she worked as an avian technician at the Center for Birds of Prey and spent two years as a surgical technician at a general practice in Virginia. She greatly enjoys client education, mentoring peers, and studying animal behavior. In her free time she loves to travel, read, bird watch, and spend time with her spouse, 2 cats & sassy amazon parrot!

Lauryn

Veterinary Assistant

Lauryn came to us in December 2020 with a background in small animal medicine, but her life is full of exotic pets! Her inquisitive mind and eagerness to learn make her invaluable to our practice. She has rescued chickens as well as a macaw and conure in her personal flock, and they and her cats and dog keep her busy. When she’s not entertaining us with her colorful personality and hilarious tales of animal antics, she enjoys kayaking, thrift shopping, and sewing.

Jess

Boarding Coordinator/Technician Assistant

Jess grew up in a home that was never without pets. From dogs to rats to bearded dragons, she has seen and loved them all. From a young age, she has known that animal care was her passion. She followed that passion to Exotic Vet Care in 2022, where she has grown from Boarding Assistant to Boarding Coordinator, providing the attentive and dedicated care that makes our facility a “home away from home” for our guests. When she is not brushing up on her ferret facts, Jess enjoys making art and spending time outdoors

Client Services Coordinator

Katie joined our staff in October 2022. Katie has been interested in animal care since she was very young and has worked as an intern with animals of all sizes. A lifelong learner and motivated to try something new, she pursued a position at Exotic Vet Care in order to advance her knowledge regarding exotic animals. In her free time she enjoys exploring the great outdoors of Charleston. Catch her out fishing along with her humongous French bulldog, Wesley!

Karyn

Client Services Coordinator

Meet Client Services Coordinator Karyn! A lifelong animal lover, Karyn began her veterinary journey back in high school at the age of 15 and joined our team in November 2023. She is a fervent advocate for empowering pet owners with knowledge as she believes that well-informed clients are key to ensuring pets lead happy, healthy lives. Outside the clinic, Karyn’s interests include baking, hanging with her two rescue pups, and a particular fondness for red pandas. Her dedication to both the well-being of animals and fostering client understanding makes her an invaluable member of our team.

APRIL 2024: We are seeking a mature, organized, intelligent, reliable and courteous Client Services Coordinator. Join our team and work with amazing vets, skilled coworkers, wonderful clients, and unique patients! An ideal candidate for this position would have prior veterinary reception experience, excellent client interaction/customer service and phone skills, possess working knowledge of MS Office programs, social media, and business machines, and be willing and able to learn the specific duties of the job.

Full-time and part-time positions available. Saturday hours twice monthly 7:45am-2pm are part of this role.

Salary range $15-18 per hour depending on experience and aptitude. Full-time benefits include accrued paid time off, staff discount for veterinary services and products, continuing education funds, uniform allowance, and employer-matched retirement plan contribution.
