The fireworks and excitement of Independence Day are thrilling and fun for humans, but can be terrifying and even dangerous to pets. The stress of the lights and noise can cause exotic pets to stop eating, which we all know can be life-threatening to some of our precious little ones, including rabbits, guinea pigs, and chinchillas. Here we offer some helpful tips to keep your pets safe, secure, and as stress-free as possible while we enjoy the festivities.
Identity Confirmed
Make sure your pet is microchipped and that your registered contact information is up-to-date. In case of accidental escape, this is the best way to ensure your pet finds its way back to you.
Play the Day Away
Before the celebrations begin, engage your pet in an energetic play session. Exercise can help tire them out and reduce stress.
Treat Yourself
While the foods of the holiday are delicious to us, they are not suited for our pets. Keep all food out of pets’ reach and make sure trash bags are tightly secured. Make sure your guests are also aware not to share human snacks with your pet, but with your supervision perhaps can give them some of their favorite treats. It’s a holiday, after all!
No Sparks
Fireworks and pets don’t mix. Keep all fireworks, sparklers, and firecrackers securely stored out of your pet’s reach. Ingesting or playing with fireworks can lead to serious injuries, burns, and toxic reactions. Additionally, sparks from fireworks and sparklers can burn pets. Safely secure pets indoors while fireworks are in use.
A Quiet Place
Set up a safe and secure area in your home for your pet. Make sure they have ready access to their food, water, litterboxes, and hides as appropriate. Create a soothing ambiance by playing soft music or turning on the TV to mask the noise of fireworks. Close curtains or blinds to minimize the bright flashes of light. Bring out their favorite toys. Mental stimulation such as puzzle toys or foraging toys can also keep them occupied and distracted during the festivities.
