With the holidays approaching, we all tend to overindulge in foods both healthy and not-so-healthy, and want to share the celebration with our pets. Rather than offer “junk food”, here are some fun and healthy seasonal treats for your special pets:
BIRDS: cooked and cooled sweet potato, whole nuts in the shell (walnuts, almonds, and pecans are healthy choices), blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, bird bread (fortified with pellets, diced or pureed vegetables, even hot peppers!)
RABBITS, GUINEA PIGS: fresh herb sprigs including parsley and cilantro, blueberry
HAMSTERS, GERBILS, MICE, RATS: cooked and cooled sweet potato, carrot pieces, green beans
FERRETS: plain cooked chicken meat (no seasoning or bones), peeled hardboiled egg slices
SUGAR GLIDERS: cooked and cooled sweet potato, carrot pieces, green beans
BEARDED DRAGONS, IGUANAS: cooked and cooled sweet potato, carrot pieces, squash pieces, green beans
LEOPARD GECKOS: gut-loaded mealworms (not too many, as they are high in fat)
Remember these are treats, intended to be fed in small amounts infrequently and only as long as the pet is healthy and eating its normal diet well. Should you have any questions or concerns about your pet, please call us at 843-216-8387. We are happy to help!
